As a child with uncontrolled Asthma in the early 80s, before the advent of at-home nebulizers, I spent quite a few periods of time at our local hospital. Their treatment solution was to have me lay inside a clear plastic oxygen tent so they could ensure I was getting all the medicine and higher concentrations of oxygen. I remember being terrified for hours on end in that tent.
Although I don’t remember the exact age I was, or the name of the Nun, I do have a very clear memory of a Nun comforting me at my hospital bedside. She gave me a laminated prayer card that had Psalm 23 and a watercolor painting of a shepherd with a flock of sheep. She then spent time going verse by verse explaining to me how we are the sheep and God is our good shepherd. I did not need to be afraid of the machines, tent, or doctors because I had God keeping me safe.
I kept that prayer card for many years and the comfort I got from the Psalm and interaction with the Nun has never been forgotten.
Last year, I was commissioned to create a line art illustration for Psalm 23. I knew I wanted to focus on bringing forth that same feeling of comfort and safety. Can you imagine being that sweet little lamb nestled in the Good Shepherd’s arms. Feeling his warmth and hearing his heartbeat?
